1. The Carpenter's Heart Life in the quaint village of Hayslope moved at its own gentle pace. It was a place where time seemed to slow down, and every day unfolded with a familiar rhythm. Right in the middle of all this was Adam Bede, a carpenter who was as solid as the oak he worked with.Adam wasn't just good at his job ; he was the kind of guy everyone in town looked up to.Now, Adam had been noticing Hetty Sorrel more and more lately. She was this pretty young thing working at Hall Farm, owned by Martin Poyser, who was always ready with a laugh. Hetty was the type of girl who turned heads without even trying. She was gorgeous, no doubt about it, but there wasn't much going on upstairs, if you know what I mean. Still, Adam couldn't help himself. The village itself was always buzzing with activity. Farmers were out in their fields from dawn to dusk, working the land like their lives depended on it – which, let's be honest, they kind of did. The Rainbow, the local pub, was where all the action happened after dark. It was like a rumor mill with beer on tap.Adam's mom, Lisbeth, was something else. She'd lost her husband, but boy, she hadn't lost her voice. She was always going on about how Hetty was more trouble than she was worth. "That girl's got more vanity than sense," she'd say, worrying about her Adam getting his heart broken. Then there was Seth, Adam's younger brother. He was cut from a different cloth, more into praying than sawing wood. Seth was always there for Adam, ready to lend an ear or a hand.Adam was stuck in the middle of all this, trying to figure out what to do. On one side, there was Hetty, who made his heart race like he'd just run a mile. On the other, there was everything else – his work, his family, who he was as a person. The carpentry shop became Adam's happy place. When he was working, all the complicated stuff about love and duty just faded away. It was just him, the wood, and his skills.Life in Hayslope kept going on around Adam. The farmers brought in their crops, golden and plenty. The Rainbow was always full of people telling stories that got bigger with every drink.Through it all, Adam stood tall, as dependable as the furniture he made. His feelings for Hetty might have been all over the place, like trying to predict the weather, but who Adam was as a person never changed. But just when everything seemed to be ticking along nicely in Hayslope, something was brewing in the Chase, the big wooded area on the Donnithorne estate. It was the kind of place where anything could happen, hidden away from prying eyes. And it looked like something was about to happen that would shake up Adam's world in ways he couldn't even imagine. The young Arthur Donnithorne, grandson of the old Squire, was supposed to be learning how to run the place.
